The site debuts with the story of Diane, a fifty-something year old woman from the Midwest that flew to Costa Rica for a Tummy Tuck ultimately staying three months to return deformed. In her case, the reduced “Costa Rica price tag” of $2300 made the surgery possible. Her local estimates of over $10,000 were simply out of reach. Now she recovers at home on total disability unable to entertain corrective surgery.
“She is a complicated case,” Dr John Di Saia, author of the site explains. “Even if her condition is appropriate for corrective surgery, she is looking at multiple tens of thousands of dollars and likely several operations for partial correction.” She wanted to tell her story as a warning for those who look to third world countries for surgical procedures. “Her pictures are as shocking as her story is.” Dr Di Saia reviews cases for the California Medical Board and adds that this is probably the worst tummy tuck outcome he has ever seen.
The plan is to add additional stories to the site at intervals. Patients will be identified by first names only. Some of these cases have achieved various degrees of correction through additional surgery.
“There are many in the plastic surgery community that will disagree with the concept of this site. They will fear it is bad for business. The importance however of letting the public know the warning signs of a potentially bad experience cannot be overemphasized. Furthermore, informing afflicted patients of the possibilities for correction and the degree to which correction may be possible is just as important,“ Dr Di Saia adds.
